1) People stand in line for 48 hours camped outside Best Buy for 48 hours waiting for the latest PlayStation release, or...

2) The Internet giveaway fever really heats up - More about this later.

The current Playstation mania is an incredible lesson in marketing. But I missed the importance of what was going on until a friend smacked me in the face with it this morning...

DUMB LIKE A FOX...

Our friend -- I'll call him AJ -- reported this morning that he and his wife had just come back from Wal-Mart where they'd been camping for 48 hours to get one of 4 available PlayStations 3 when they went on sale...

Unbelievable! I thought he was insane when he told us this. Who wants a PlayStation bad enough to stand in line 48 hours?

Well...

He said with a smile, "We got two!"

So! It was still 48 hours in front of a store, right? Do your kids really need PlayStations THAT badly?

"Oh, they're not for the kids! We listed them on eBay within an hour," he said, still smiling. "And they're averaging 5 to 7 thousand dollars. Some have sold for more than $14,000." Search for "PlayStation 3" on eBay. I was blown away at the prices.

I was stunned. Not because of the price (people pay extravagant prices for just about anything), nor because my "insane" friend actually made about $390 per hour if he sells them both for $7000, but because I had totally missed the entire marketing lesson expertly laid out by Sony and Wal-Mart.

The six basic marketing persuaders from Robert Cialdini's classic book, "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion", are in full view!

** Authority -- Wal-Mart. Love 'em or hate 'em, they are the big kahuna in mega store retailing. If they advertise that they have 4 PlayStations in stock...they've got 4 and only 4 in stock. But they promise they can get more because...well, they can.

** Liking -- People practically live at Wal-Mart. Convenience and service translate into customers with an undying loyalty to them, often because they've become the only game in town.

** Commitment with Consistency -- Let's see. Stand outside in November in the rain for 48 hours to be the first in line for the release of a new product. That's serious commitment!

** Reciprocation -- Wal-Mart provides a free (and massive) PS3 buyer's guide on their site that provides all the information you need to make a decision between the $500 and $600 basic units, and all the accessories required. Giving such complete information not only sets up the authority persuader but also makes you value the content and feel indebted to the retailer. That's called reciprocity.

** Social Proof -- The press has been lapping up Sony's press releases about the PlayStation launch date and the lack of product. And the gaming blogs can talk of nothing else.

** Scarcity -- Sony is really smart! They do this every year. Release only enough of the hot product to create an insatiable appetite for it. They may have warehouses full of PlayStations, but they won't release them until the market begs for more.

HOW DID I MISS THIS!

AJ knew -- before he invested the time to stand in line --that the market was clamoring for the product. And he saw an opportunity.

He had no intention of keeping the PlayStations himself. His research on eBay confirmed that PS3 fans were rabid and would pay any price!

Like any good marketer, he remembered the first rule: Determine what the market wants and sell it to them. As Mark Hendricks, a master marketer, and creator of the Christmas season giveaways, likes to say, that's the difference between "marketing" and "selling" -- it's much easier to make money when you're providing a much-wanted service.

Selling something no one wants is hard work, indeed. Marketing is easy.

I should have seen it too. I've studied with some great internet marketers. Most teach the basic principles of Robert Cialdini's book.

CHRISTMAS MADNESS...

During the Christmas season, online marketers flock to the Internet to collect gifts -- usually informational products and software tools. Always free, hence the name giveaway, the purpose is to drive traffic. All of Cialdini's six persuaders are used to create the buzz, exchange the gifts for e-mail addresses and names.

The 12 Days of Christmas is the granddaddy of the online giveaway extravaganza and Mark Hendricks is the father of the concept. For several years now, Mark has brought together more than 75 top marketers to giveaway hundreds of products during the month of December.

Because the concept worked so well and has become an Internet marketing staple, a gazillion giveaways pop up. It's now a standard tool in every marketer's toolkit. Why does it work so well. It's based on one of Cialdini's persuaders -- reciprocity.

I give you something and you'll feel obligated to give me something back. It's a technique used everywhere. When you go to the grocery, clerks stand at sample stations offering everything from cubes of cheese to portions of spaghetti and meatballs. Why? If you take a sample, chances are really good that you'll buy the product.

But at Christmas...Whew! It's tough to keep up and maintain enough free disk space on your computer for all the online giveaway opportunities.

The six persuaders (all included above) are real. Until I got involved in the Internet, I had no idea I was being "persuaded" at every turn. We all react to them, will forever, and have ever since the first caveman tried to sell the first hunk of meat to his neighbor.

It took a PlayStation 3 and AJ to point me back to the "real" world to see it in action there too.

Just What Is Commercial Foreclosure Law?

The cast of characters. Everyone knows what a bank is. Most of us understand what a lender is an institution from whom money is borrowed. Adding the word commercial to describe a lender simply means that the financial entity deals with businesses as opposed to individuals. Blacks Law Dictionary defines commercial loans as: loans made to businesses as distinguished from personal-consumer credit loans. Although a lender could make both commercial and consumer loans, this blog is dedicated primarily to commercial matters.

The field of law. To me, commercial foreclosure law refers to the rules and procedures applicable when a business defaults on a loan secured by some kind of collateral. So, if you work for an institution that loaned money to a business, and if the borrower defaulted under the terms of the loan agreement, then commercial foreclosure law provides the judicial framework for the protection of your rights. Typically, those rights involve the ability to collect money owed by the borrower through the sale of the loan collateral.

Collateral. Blacks states that collateral is property pledged as security for the satisfaction of a debt. If a business defaults on a loan, the lender can initiate a foreclosure action to compel the sale of the loan collateral and therefore collect the amounts owed by the borrower through proceeds from the sale. There are all kinds of business-related collateral. Perhaps the most recognizable is real estate the land a business owns. Some of the most interesting cases, however, deal with personal property collateral, which can be any property imaginable that is owned by a business a fleet of cars, office furniture or intangibles such as accounts receivable.

Lien. A lien is a description of an encumbrance on property: a claim . . . on property for payment of some debt. Blacks. In the context of my blog, a lien arises by written contract between a lender and a borrower either a real estate mortgage agreement or a personal property security agreement. The lien granted by a borrower to a lender gives a lender the right to foreclose upon the subject property (collateral) for payment of the debt in the event of a default.

Commercial foreclosure. Turning again to Blacks, a foreclosure is defined, in part, as the enforcement of a lien . . . or mortgage . . .. Paraphrasing Blacks, foreclosure is the legal process by which real or personal property subject to a lien is sold in satisfaction of a debt. To foreclose means to terminate a borrowers rights in the subject property. A foreclosure that is commercial merely refers to the termination of a business borrowers rights in its property.

A form of collection. Commercial foreclosure law is a special kind of collection law. Its a body of rules governing how banks and financial institutions recover money by asserting rights in, and selling, collateral that a business granted to secure the loan. Its the set of legal principles applicable to a lender needing to collect money owed by a business, which failed to make its loan payments or otherwise defaulted under the terms of the loan documents. The second most consumed beverage behind water is tea. Interestingly enough the 3,200,000 tones of tea produced worldwide come from only one plant species, named "camellia sinensis." But how a plant becomes a beverage? Tea is made by steeping processed leaves, buds, or twigs of the tea bush in hot water for a few minutes, a great variety of tea tastes, aromas and colors can excite even the more skeptical drinker. If you do like tea drinking, but simply never had the opportunity to learn more about it beyond the fact that you enjoy it, you should know that there are thousands of kinds of tea offered on today's market. Shades in flavor derive from the region of cultivation and the method of processing the tea leaves. It is the processing techniques that produce the four simple tea categories are considered the art of tea making. In its most basic form, processing is the taking of the raw green leaves and deciding whether or not, and how much oxidation (or fermentation) should take place before drying them out. Oxidation is the reaction of the enzymes contained in tea leaves when they are broken, bruised or crushed.

The first category is that of black tea. Black tea is nothing more than the leaves of the camellia sinensis after being exposed to 8-24 hours of open air. After the leaves are picked up they are spread out to let the water they contain evaporate. You have probably witnessed it happening to a flower that is left without being watered. The foliage curls up and begins to dry. After this part of the process, the tea leaves are balled into rolls that encourage oxidization. When fully oxidized, the leaves turn into a rich black color. Tea producers then put the tea leaves into the final drying period before sorting and packaging them.

Oolong tea is another tea category and is considered to be the most difficult of the four types of teas to process. The best way to describe oolong tea is that it is somewhere in between green and black tea. This is because the leaves are only partially oxidized during the processing. As with black tea, the leaves are spread out to dry for 8-24 hours, but after that, they are tossed about in a basket in order to create a bruising and partial exposure to the air. The final step involves steaming the leaves, which neutralizes the enzymes in the tea and prevents further oxidization.

Green teas, like white teas, are closer to tasting like fresh leaves of grass that the other two tea categories. This type of tea is also lower in caffeine and has higher antioxidant properties. The whole process of creating green tea revolves around preventing oxidization from taking place in the leaves. Though the tea leaves are sometimes laid out to dry for a few hours, then, in order to neutralize the enzymes and prevent further oxidation, the leaves are steamed or pan fried. It is this very technique which results in the preservation of the enzymes which have recently become the focus of medical research. After steaming, the leaves are rolled up, still quite green in color.

Finally, white tea has recently become a popular item in the west as it is the least processed tea and thus tastes the most like fresh leaves or grass. White tea is made of the little buds of the tea plant. Again like green tea, white tea is steamed or pan fried to prevent any kind of oxidization, and great care is taken to avoid bruising or crushing the tea. The dried buds have a silver-like appearance because the tiny white hairs of new growth are still present.

10 Guidelines For A Stress-Free Labor

Being pregnant is truly exhilarating, especially when the due date is approaching. You must be very anxious right now. You feel that you can not wait for the baby to arrive, yet you get this nervousness about how your labor is going to be.

There are actually some things that you should be ready too. Those you can do to ensure that the delivery is as stress free as possible. Dont forget to ask your partner/spouse to stick together with you in this, and especially when the delivery comes.

Here are the things:

1. Be prepared

Get the easy stuff out of the way! Have your overnight bag packed with night clothes, a robe, a going home outfit, toiletries, including your preferred brand of maxi pad and a baby outfit. Also have a diaper bag ready with spare diapers and all the powder, baby oil and wipes you might need between the hospital and home.

2. Have your overnight bag packed

And, whatever you do, leave the overnight bag where both you and your spouse can find it. When you start feeling labor pains, you do not want to be stuck searching the house high and low for your to-go bag. You just want to go, and being prepared can take so much stress away from an already hectic day. In your packing, also do not forget to bring along important phone numbers of family and friends you will want to call, as well as your insurance information.

3. Prepare your car with a regulation car seat

Being prepared also extends to the car; it is recommended that you have your vehicle already equipped with a regulation car seat. Doing so will make things go so much easier when its time to bring baby home; you cannot leave the hospital without placing baby in a car seat (no matter how much you may want to hold him!). So, let Dad get the car seat set up and practice taking a baby doll in and out of it.

4. Know where you are going

Speaking of the car, know where you are going. This might sound obvious, but when you factor in traffic jams and accidents that may close down familiar streets, it makes more sense. It really helps to do practice runs with alternative routes to the hospital before the big day.

Be prepared for inclement weather, traffic accidents and closed roads. This way, if one path is closed, Dad wont send Mom into a panic by taking another less familiar route. Trust us, when a woman is in labor, its not the time to spring any unnecessary surprises on her.

On that matter, make sure your car is also tuned up, filled with gas and fully equipped with a spare tire and any tools for patching up a flat. And never leave home without a cell phone. This way, you can call an ambulance if you experience car trouble.

5. Pre-register at the hospital if possible

Furthermore, if at all possible, pre-register at the hospital. Doing so cuts down on the amount of paperwork you have to complete when you go into labor. And, it makes it easier for the staff to assist you if they already know which doctor to call and which medications you can and cannot take.

6. Know who will be with you during the labor

Once you do reach the hospital, know who will be with you during the labor. If you only want your hubby in the delivery room, make that known. Dont worry about hurting peoples feelings, either. This day is about what makes you most comfortable.

7. Concentrate on something other than your pain during labor

Eventually, all the other concerns will seem small as the labor pains increase. If you need any antibiotics, such as for strep, make sure you get them--likewise with any pain killers. After your water breaks and you are in labor, relax and practice your breathing techniques. Chew on some ice to re-hydrate yourself, too; realize that labor is a long and hard process, so dont get exasperated. If you can concentrate on something other than your pain during the labor, that also helps. For example, if you can concentrate on a clock or a painting, you can better focus.

8. Hold your baby right after the delivery

Eventually, youre bundle of joy will emerge. When he/she does, make sure you hold your baby right after the delivery so you know for yourself that everything is OK.

9. Get plenty of rest afterward

Then, get plenty of rest afterwards and dont be afraid to ask the nurse to limit your visitors. You will be busy and unable to get much uninterrupted sleep once you leave the hospital, so take advantage while you can.

10. Dont let others comments bother you

Finally, dont let others comments bother you. Of course, not everyone will love the adorable name you select for your baby, but that isnt your problem. Likewise, if you decide to bottle feed instead of breast feed, expect some (unsolicited) comments. Just remember, its your baby, so do what feels right to you. Thats the best way to remain a stress-free Mommy!

Why? Because I am going to expose the Affiliate Project X (or APX) Scam here. You have probably heard about this ebook and asked yourself these questions....

(1) Is this just another scam on the Internet?
(2) Is it overhyped?
(3) Can I make money after reading the ebook?
(4) Is it the real deal?
(5) etc.. etc...

I have purchased and read the book. And firstly, I want to answer the 2nd question... Is Affiliate Project X (APX) overhyped? The answer is yes the ebook is overhyped. The reason why it is overhyped is because the ebook promises to reveal top secrets that other internet marketing gurus don't want you to know.

But is it true? Read on...

I personally think that not all the methods taught in the ebook are unique or new. Some of the methods have been used and taught by many successful affiliates. But for some reasons, not many people are using them. APX just repackage the ideas and make it clearer to everyone who reads it.

Is it a scam? You will be able to answer this question after you read my review...

The more interesting question is can you make money after reading it? Well.. the answer is no if you just read and don't apply it. You will be disappointed if you expect immediate return because it is not a "get-rich-quick" scheme. You can only make money if you learn and apply the methods taught in the ebook consistently. Period.

Now Let me outline what the ebook covers so we can answer whether it is a scam or not.

Here it goes... the ebook teaches 6 methods:

Method #1: The "LEECH"
This method is not new but not many people are using it. Why? Because there is some learning curve here. APX reveals the proven formula with concrete example. It is the art of selling on the net. If you are willing to spend some efforts to learn the art, you will beat most of your competitors. I followed his formula and monitored my sales went up 50%. But the downside is I spent lot of time reading, learning and applying the art and then changing my web sites. I can't expose all the details here because it won't be fair to the author. You need to buy the ebook and get the details. APX will show you step by step how to master the art quickly and beat the competition.

Method #2: The "AFFILIATE DIARY"
This method is also not new and has been taught by other gurus. But the problem here is many people do it the wrong way. It is about building your list and making money at the same time. Many people has gone the wrong path and delay the monetizing process. If you buy APX, please read page 21 very carefully about "impulse purchase". This method not only helps me to build my list but also increase my income. Very powerful technique taught here. This method alone cost more than the price of the ebook. I love this method. If I were to write the book, I will call this method "Build and Monetize". Again the ebook outlines lots more details about this method.

Method #3: The "WORKHORSE"
Now this method is only useful for the hard-working people, it involves some works (that's why it is called workhorse). If you are lazy, this method is useless to you. If you want to quit your day job and make a full-time living from affiliate marketing, this method is for you. But first please ask yourself this question and answer honestly: How bad do you want to quit your job? If you are not sure, please don't do it. If you want to quit your job badly, use this method. APX will give you the step by step instructions how to make $50-$200 per day within 30 days. Again I want to mention one more time, you need to have a mentality like a horse to make this works.

Method #4: "THIEF IN THE NIGHT"
Please note that this method is not about teaching you to steal other people's works or ideas. It is about following what the successful affiliates do. If I were to write APX, I will rename it as "FOLLOW THE LEADERS". This is exactly what the method teaches. It shows you how to identify those successful affiliates and find out what they do then follow them. If you buy APX, please read page 34-36 carefully and do it. Surprisingly, it is not difficult to uncover what those super affiliates do. The trick is you need to know how to do it.

Method #5: "FOLLOW THE BEST PART 2"
Perhaps you wonder why this is "PART 2"? While Method #4 teaches you some basic skills to follow the best without any automated tool, this method requires you to use an automated tool. I love this automated tool because it basically automates the efforts of uncovering the best affiliates and what they do to make money on the net. If you are serious about affiliate marketing, this tool is indispensable. Now I can't live without this tool :-)

Method #6: The "OPPORTUNIST"
Would you like to know how to discover hot products early before others? This method will show you the way. But if you are new with Affiliate Marketing, I suggest you focus more energy on method #1-5 first. Because when you are new, it is best to focus on few great products and work hard to promote them so you can make some money. If you follow method #6, you will need to spend money to invest and experience the new products quite often. Therefore you need to have the skills and experiences to promote and sell products quickly to recoup your investment costs. New affiliates may not have the money and skills to buy and sell products quickly.

So these are the 6 methods taught in Affiliate Project X (APX). The last chapter of the book discusses some advanced tricks such as link cloaking, sales tracking, backend sales and promotion methods. If you read the ebook, pay close attention on page 42 about "Backend Sales" because I used this technique and experienced positive results (I experienced an increase in repeat sales from existing customers).

Now is APX a scam? Well.. for me it is definitely not a scam because I have learned and applied the methods and made money. But for those people who had purchased and did not apply the methods, they will say it is a scam. So it depends which categoty are you in?

How To Determine The Origin Of Spam?

Spam will continue spreading as far as it makes profit. If nobody buys from spammers or acts upon their scams, spam will end. This is the obvious and easiest way to fight spam. You can ignore and delete spam emails you receive. But you can also take vengeance on the spammer by complaining to the spammer's Internet Service Provider (ISP). The ISP will block their connection and maybe impose a fine (depending on the ISP's acceptable usage policy). Spammers beware of such complaints and try to disguise their messages. That's why finding the right ISP is not always easy.

Lets look inside a spam message. Every email message includes two parts, the body and the header. The body is the actual message text and attachments. The header is a kind of the envelope of the message. The header shows the address of the message sender, the address of the message recipient, the message subject and other information. Email programs usually display these header fields:

From: shows the sender's name and email address.
To: shows the recipient's name and email address.
Date: shows the date when the message was sent.
Subject: shows the message subject.

The From: field usually contains the sender's email address. This lets you know who sent the message and allows you easily reply. Spammers, of course, dont want you to reply and dont want you to know who they are. Therefore, they put forged email addresses into the From: lines of their emails. So the From: field wont help you if you want to determine where the spam email comes from.

Tip! With G-Lock SpamCombat you can easily preview not only the message text but also all the fields of the message header . You can choose the preview format by yourself. You can view the message as HTML, decoded message, or message source.There are also several Received: fields in the header of every message. Email programs dont usually display the Received: lines but the Received: lines can be very helpful in tracing the spam origin.

Just like a postal letter goes through a number of post offices before its delivered to the recipient, an email message is processed by several mail servers. Each mail server adds a line to the message header a Received: line which contains

- the server name and IP address of the machine the server received the message from and
- the name of the mail server itself.

Each Received: line is inserted at the top of the message header. If we want to reproduce the messages path from sender to recipient, we start from the topmost Received: line and walk down until the last one, which is where the email originated.

Just like the From: field the Received: lines may contain forged information to fool those who would want to trace the spammer. Because every mail server inserts the Received: line at the top of the header, we start the analysis from the top.

The Received: lines forged by spammers usually look like normal Received: fields. We can hardly tell whether the Received: line is forged or not at first sight. We should analyze all the Received: lines chain to find out a forged Received: field.

As we mentioned above, every mail server registers not only its name but also the IP address of the machine it got the message from. We simply need to look what name a server puts and what the next server in the chain says. If the servers dont match, the earlier Received: line is forged.

The origin of the email is what the server immediately after the forged Received: line says about where it received the message from.

Let's see how determining of the spam email origin works in real life. Here is the header of a spam message weve recently received:

At first, look at the forged From: field. The email address in the From: and Reply-To: lines doesnt exist. So, the spammer took care about directing bounced messages and all the indignant replies people may send to a non-existing email account.

Secondly, the Subject: line. It contains the variations of the Meds and Viagra words that are known to be met in spam messages. Plus, the subject contains a range of random characters. Its obvious that the subject line is skillfully tailored to fool anti-spam filters.

Lastly, lets analyze the Received: lines. We start from the oldest one - Received: from 164.145.240.209 by 60.17.139.96; Tue, 07 Nov 2006 05:53:35 -0500. There are two IP addresses in it: 60.17.139.96 says it received the message from 164.145.240.209.

We check if the next (and last in this case) mail server in the chain confirms the state of the first Received: line. In the second Received: field we have: Received: from unknown (HELO 60.17.139.96) (221.200.13.158) by mail1.myserver.xx with SMTP; 7 Nov 2006 10:54:16 -0000.

mail1.myserver.xx is our server and we can trust it. It received the message from an "unknown" host, which says it has the IP address 60.17.139.96. Yes, this confirms what the previous Received: line says.

Now lets find out where our mail server got the message from. For this purpose, we look at the IP address in brackets before the server name mail1.myserver.xx. It is 221.200.13.15. This is the IP address the connection was established from, and it is not 60.17.139.96. The spam message originates from 221.200.13.15. Its important to note that its not necessarily that the spammer is sitting at the computer 221.200.13.15 and sending spam over the world. It may happen the computers owner doesnt even suspect of being sending spam. The computer may be hijacked by a Trojan, which is spreading spam without the machines owner knowing it.

We hope this information will help you identify the spammer's ISP and report them about spam so they can take proper measures.

New Experience For Some San Diego Schools Students And Their Teachers

This July, Annie Santana, a Spanish teacher at Mission Bay High School, part of the San Diego schools, departed the city and headed for the island of Robinson Crusoe, Chile. In the seventh year of her career, Santana joined the Fulbright teacher exchange program.

For one year, Santana will teach English as a second language at a Chilean school on the island; but her students will not be losing her. A Chilean teacher will be replacing Santana at Mission Bay. While both teachers are immersing themselves into their new cultures, the students in both countries also will be exposed through their teachers to a new cultural experience and another country.

Both teachers will have many challenges to face, since there are many differences between the cultures. Chilean classrooms, for example, are smaller in size than those in the San Diego schools. The culture-driven relationships between teacher and student are much closer in Chile, as well.

Santana initiated the contact with the Fulbright teacher exchange program. She believed that she was ready to advance to the next level of cross-cultural experiences by teaching abroad. Santana thoroughly researched the available options. Many did not meet her needs, since she would have to give up her teaching position with the San Diego schools. The Fulbright program best fit her needs, since the exchange is only for one year and an exchange teacher will take her place, allowing her to retain her position with the San Diego schools.

Santana chose Chile, because it is more economically stable than other Latin American countries. To prepare for her trip to Chile, she read the House of Spirits, by Chilean author Isabel Allende. The book aptly portrays the culture in Chile, which is largely influenced by the many German immigrants over the years.

Before leaving in July, Santana remarked of her interest in experiencing the differences between the cultures of the U.S. and Chile. She also was excited to see how Chile differs from other Latin American cultures, of which she is familiar from her own Mexican heritage. She also was looking forward to seeing how school operations differ from the San Diego schools, as well as societal norms and the general day-to-day routines.

Other differences that Santana and her students back in the San Diego schools will experience are the Chilean customs and the difference between the Spanish known and taught by Santana and Chilean Spanish, which has a different accent, slang and word usage.

Santana is scheduled to return to the United States and the San Diego schools in July 2007. Until then, she plans to communicate with her family, friends, the Chilean teacher, and her San Diego schools students by way of the Internet. She wants everyone, especially her San Diego schools students, to enjoy her adventure with her. It is a great opportunity for them to experience life outside San Diego.

PRINCIPLE OF COMBUSTION

The primary function of the Thermal Oxidizer is to destroy the contaminants in the exhaust coming out of a process. The operation of the Thermal Oxidizer is based on the principle of combustion. The process of combustion is the most commonly used method to control emissions of organic compounds.

Combustion based systems are always simple systems capable of having very high destruction efficiency. These systems typically consist of burners, which ignite the fuel and pollutants, and a chamber, which provides the appropriate residence time for the combustion to take place. Combustion is a chemical process arising from the rapid combination of oxygen with various elements or chemical compounds resulting in release of heat. The process of combustion has also been referred to as oxidation or incineration.

It is required to achieve complete combustion of the fuel gas so that no further air pollutants are added. To achieve complete combustion once the contaminated air and fuel have been brought into contact, the following conditions must be provided: a temperature high enough to ignite the waste-fuel mixture, turbulent mixing of the air and waste-fuel mixture, and sufficient residence time for the reaction to occur. These three conditions are referred to as the "three T's of combustion". The rate at which a combustible product is oxidized is greatly affected by temperature. The higher the temperature, the faster the oxidation reaction will proceed.

The process of ignition depends on the following factors:

1. Concentration of combustibles in the waste stream.

2. Inlet temperature of the waste stream.

3. Rate of heat loss from the combustion chamber.

4. Residence time and flow pattern of the waste stream.

5. Combustion chamber geometry and materials of construction.

RETENTION CHAMBER DESIGN

Thermal destruction of most organic compounds occurs between 590F and 650F. However, most hazardous waste incinerators are operated at 1400F. The time for which the pollutants stay in the incinerator is called residence time. The higher the residence time, the lower the temperature can be for the combustion chamber.

The residence time of gases in the combustion chamber is calculated by

t = V / Q

where,

t = residence time, seconds

V = chamber volume, ft3

Q = gas volumetric flow rate at combustion ft3/s.

Adjustments to flow rates must be made for the extra combustion air added. For complete combustion to occur, every particle of waste and fuel must come in contact with air (oxygen). If this does not happen, unreacted waste and fuel will be exhausted from the stack. Second, not the entire fuel or waste stream is able to be in direct contact with the burner flame.

In most incinerators, a portion of the waste stream may bypass the flame and be mixed at some point downstream of the burner with the hot products of combustion. A number of methods are used to improve mixing the air and waste streams, including the use of refractory baffles, swirl-fired burners, and baffle plates. Unless properly designed, many of these mixing devices may create "dead spots" and reduce operating temperatures.

The process of mixing flame and waste stream to obtain a uniform temperature for the decomposition of wastes is the most difficult part in the design of an incinerator. A Thermal Oxidizer must be designed very carefully and with proven methods to achieve maximum mixing of airflows and to avoid dead spots.

THERMAL OXIDIZER OPERATION

A Thermal Oxidizer consists of a combustion chamber, a burner, and a blower to draw air through the complete oxidizer. Along with the contaminant-laden gas stream, air and fuel are continuously delivered to the combustion chamber where the fuel is combusted.

The products of combustion and the unreacted feed stream enter the reaction zone of the unit. The pollutants in the process air are then reacted at elevated temperature. The average gas velocity can range from 10 fps to 50 fps. These high velocities are useful in preventing the particulates from settling down. The energy liberated by the reaction may be directly recovered from process or indirectly recovered by using a heat exchanger.

INSULATION

The Thermal Oxidizer should be constructed of material which can withstand high temperatures and the walls of the equipment are insulated to avoid overheating of the outside walls of the unit. These units are usually provided with sophisticated flame detection devices. The layer of insulation exposed in the Combustion Chamber is typically ceramic block that is 7 thick and a density of 10 lbs./ft3.

Construction of a Vertical Spread
Construction of a vertical spread occurs with the purchase and sale of a call (put) in the same stock and in the same month. The only difference between the two options is the strike price. For example, an investor would construct a vertical spread by purchasing the IBM June 55-call while selling the June IBM 60 call. This trade would be called the IBM June 55 - 60 call spread. Similarly, a purchase of the IBM July 45 put and sale of the IBM July 60 put would be called the IBM July 45 - 60 put spread.

The key to the constructing these vertical spreads is choosing options in the same stock and month, but different strikes and in a 1 to 1 ratio. That is, you must purchase one option for every one you sell or sell one option for every one you buy.

Value and the Vertical Spread
A vertical spread's maximum value is the difference between the two strikes. For example, the maximum value of the June 55 - 60-call spread mentioned previously is $5.00. [60 - 55] = $5.

Using the June 55 - 60-call spread example, we will set the date to June expiration on Friday. On that day, all the June options will expire and the options will be worth parity, as all of the extrinsic value will have eroded away.

Where does the spread get its value? From its two components - the call (put) you buy or the call (put) you sell. Look at the spread's value with a couple of different closing stock prices. If the stock closes at $55, then both the 55 strike and the 60 strike will be out of the money and worthless. The value of the spread will be zero since both options are worth $0. If the stock closes at $57.50, the June 55 calls will be worth $2.50. The June 60 calls will be out of the money and thus worthless, therefore the spread will be worth $2.50 (June 55 call $ 2.50 - June 60 call $0).

If the stock closes at $60.00, then the June 55 calls will be worth $5.00. Meanwhile, the June 60 calls will be worth $0. This means that the spread will be worth $5.00 (June 55 call $ 5.00 - June 60 call $0). This is the maximum value of the spread. Note that the maximum value is identical to the difference between the strikes.
As the stock goes higher, the June 60 call becomes in-the-money and gains intrinsic value. For every penny that the stock increases in value, the June 55 calls and June 60 calls gain value equally, keeping the $5.00 spread between the two strikes constant.

The difference between the strikes is the maximum value of all vertical spreads regardless of the distance between the two strikes. It does not matter whether the spread is $5.00 wide, $10.00 wide, $20.00 wide, or even $50.00 wide. Its maximum value is the difference between the two strikes. Further, the vertical spread's maximum value (the difference between the two strikes) holds true for vertical put spreads as well as vertical call spreads. Look at our other example, the July 45 - 60 put spread.

Again we set time forward to Friday, July expiration. We set the stock closing price at $60.00. At $60.00, both the July 45 puts and the July 60 puts will be out of the money and thus worthless. With the July 45 puts and July 60 puts worthless, the spread is also worthless (July 60 put $0 - July 45 put $0). If the stock finishes at $52.50, then the July 60 puts will be worth $7.50 while the July 45 puts will still be worthless. In this scenario, the July 45 - 60 put spread will be worth $7.50 (July 60 puts $7.50 - July 45 puts $0). If the stock finishes at $45.00, then the July 60 puts will be worth $15.00 while the July 45 puts will be worth $0.

At this level, the spread is worth $15.00 (July 60 puts $15.00 - July 45 puts $0). This is the maximum value of the spread. As you can see, it is identical to the $15.00 difference between the strikes.

As the stock lowers, the July 45 puts become in the money and gain intrinsic value. For every penny that the stock decreases in value, the July 60 puts and the July 45 puts will gain value equally, keeping the $15.00 spread between the two strikes constant. To see this, refer to the table below.

As stated, the maximum value of a vertical spread is the difference between the two strikes while the minimum value of the spread is, of course, $0. This means that in this strategy, both the buyer and the seller have a limited, fixed maximum loss.

The buyer can only lose what he spent. Therefore, if the buyer spent $2.20 to purchase the August 35 - 40-call spread, the most he can lose is the $2.20 he spent.

For the seller, the maximum loss is the difference between the maximum value of the spread (difference between the strikes) and the amount of money received for the sale of the spread. For example, if you were to sell the August 35 - 40-call spread for $2.20 then your maximum loss will be $2.80. Remember, the maximum value of the spread is the difference between the 2 strikes or $5.00 (40 - 35).

The difference between the maximum value of the spread ($5.00) and the amount the seller received for the sale ($2.20) leaves a $2.80 maximum loss.

The Internet is another great place to find parenting classes. There are even online parenting classes available. However, actual classes are, as of now, considered more effective than online ones.

2. How Much Do They Cost Some organizations offer free parenting classes. However, some of these classes are limited engagement classes and do not offer regular on-going advice and counseling. There are some that offer classes for rates as low $10 to $20, while others may be a lot pricier, but they all depend on your situation and preferences.

Parenting classes usually encourage their members to purchase additional material such as instructional tapes, books, and other materials. These additional materials are worth the investment as they will add significantly to your learning experience.

3. Why Should You Take a Parenting Class? - A parenting class is not only those that have parenting problems. All parents are encouraged to join one, as long as they have the desire to be better parents, and to have a better understanding of their children.

Which City Really Does Have The Most Restaurants Per Capita?

Travel to most city websites around the net and youll be surprised by how many purport to have more restaurants per capita than anywhere else. This is claimed by San Francisco; Madison, Wisconsin; Washington DC; and Shreveport, Louisiana. At least Canadian cities stake the same claim.

So which cities do have a legitimate claim to the title of Most Restaurants Per Capita? The National Restaurant Association (NRA) does publish a list of restaurants per capita per state. According to the Association, California has by far the most restaurants with a staggering 87,225 dining establishments. New York State comes in at a paltry 58,027. The top five is rounded out by Texas (53,631), Florida (41,901) Pennsylvania (31,466).

In terms of per capita per state, Washington DC tops the list according to NRA. The US capital region boosts some 0.4 restaurants per 100 people. Second is, surprisingly, Montana at .354 restaurants per 100 people. Rounding out the NRAs top five are Rhode Island (0.304 per 100) Vermont (.303 per 100) New York (.301 per 100). If you are a little hungry you might want avoid the three states with the fewest restaurants Mississippi, Kentucky and Utah.

In terms of North American cities, it is a little harder to ascertain who can claim the title of city with most restaurants per capita.

Here are ten cities with more than 100,000 people that have made the claim. But who has the real claim? Who offers the cuisine searcher or just plain hungry shopper the most choice? Who can claim the title of The Restaurant City.

The city of San Francisco is a city of 744,230 people and claims to have 2,662 restaurants within the city boundaries. There is no doubt that the standard of restaurants in the city of the bay is exceptional. If you just include San Francisco properly your density is 279 people per restaurant. But because costs of housing the number of people living in the city proper has declined while the number of businesses including restaurants, San Francisco is a distorted number. If you count the metro area, the number of restaurants climbs to 4,300 restaurants (we wont include hundreds more in the nearby wine country of Napa and Sonoma). If you consider the metro area population of 7,168,176 and divide by 4,300 you get a per capita density of 1,667 people per restaurant.

Winnipeg is a city on the edge of the Canadian prairies that boasts a broad cross section of immigrant communities all of whom have their local ethnic cuisines. If you want French toast for breakfast, perogies and sauerkraut for lunch , and Vietnamese imperial rolls for dinner then this is the place to come. This city regularly claims to have more restaurants per capita than any other city. Some websites claim the city has 900 restaurants but in reality there are just 478. With a population of 619,544 Winnipeg can claim only one restaurant per 1,296 snow-bound Canadian.

Victoria. This city on Vancouver Island and capital city of British Columbia, Canada regularly makes the claim that it has the second highest number of restaurants per capita, which is perhaps clever psychology as the city has never indicted which is top. With a population of 335,000 the city claims to have 265 Italian, French, Greek, East Indian, Vegetarian, German, Dutch, Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, and Thai eateries. That means Victoria has a restaurant per 1,264 people. But with its spectacular location halfway between Vancouver and Seattle, youd hardly care if its claim is a little off.

In New York City no one cooks at home and by the time youve heard of a restaurant it has probably closed. Restaurants open and close with alarming alacrity in the Big Apple. On average, the city of New York can claim 6,650 dining places from the chic Lespinasse to the greasiest corner diner -- the most restaurants in any one place on the continent. Yet with 8,168,338 people, New York can only claim to have 1, 228 people per restaurant. It might seem that every second building in New York is a restaurant but they have to cater to a lot of vertically housed residents. That explains why it is hard to find a table some nights.

The one Canadian city that can make a great claim to have the most restaurants per capita is Montreal in the province of Quebec. With just over 5,000 restaurants in the metro island area, is appears there are at least one restaurant on every street corner. With its diverse immigrant population and French majority, the city has every type of cuisine available from Lebanese to continental French to native Canadian. Some 3,720,000 Quebecois live in the metro area making Montreal the second largest French speaking city in the world. Giving it a restaurant per capita number of 744.

When you leave Austin you enter Texas so the saying goes. This funky city in central Texas has 1,088 eating places to enhance its reputation as Music City USA. That list includes 128 establishments in or around the University of Texas alone. Austins burgeoning population is currently 690, 252 making their people to restaurant ratio 634.

Louisville, home to the Kentucky Derby, is a small city of just over half a million people. Pap Johns Pizza and Yum Brands, the parent company of A&W, KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, both make Louisville their corporate home so it is not surprising that that this city on the Ohio River has 1,089 restaurants. That makes for 510 people per restaurant.

Madison owns the rights to the title of city with the most restaurants per capita and the capital makes the claim throughout its literature. However, pining down the actual number of restaurants is pretty hard. The best list available points to 437 restaurants that caters to 221,551 people in the Wisconsin city. But that makes for only 506 people for each restaurant. Good for only third on this list.

Wichita, Kansas is not usually a city that leaps to mind when one thinks of cuisine. But with an ethnically diverse work force, the largest city in Kansas has a reputation for cultural diversity and is located in the breadbasket of America. The 739 restaurants in town have only to cater to 360, 715 people. That translates into 488 people per restaurant, good for second on our list.

Dallas. This Lone Star State city has a population of 1,250,950 and a selection of restaurants that add up to 2,666. While the city is known for its BBQ and steak houses there is a surprising mix of great eateries from chic to basic. That means every restaurant, fast food place and steak house in Texas third largest city can boast an potential pool of just 469 people. Making this city the winner of the title City With The Most Restaurants per Capita.

Not only will you keep your cruise within your budget, but you may also find you save enough on one shore excursion to help pay for those more expensive, once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as a seaplane exploration of the Misty Fjords. When booking independent excursions, do keep in mind the time you have in each port of call, and book trips with plenty of time to arrive at the departure point and get back to your ship on time.

5 Practical Examples of Landscape Abstracts

These articles provide our readers with a theoretical basis on the topic. While in the current post you will find practical examples of this kind of photography. But first read a few practical tips to sum up the information from the previous articles.

Tips:

1. Learn to notice less obvious things use elements that make a landscape more emphatic. They are colors, forms, lines and textures.

2. Dont be afraid of experimenting with various composition schemes, but remember about simplicity.

3. Telephoto lenses help you single out small details of a landscape to create an abstract shot which is sure to attract attention.

5 Practical Examples of Landscape Abstracts

1. Sunset. Greece. This image is distinguished by its slight graininess, that makes an image look as an impressionistic one. Although this shot is not a detailed landscape, I sill include it in the post, because of special effects used here. The image was shot using a high sensitive film of ISO 1600. The equipment used is the Nikon F9, a 105 mm macro lens, a cable release, a polarizing filter, f/16, 1/4 sec.

2. The Namib Desert, Namibia, South West Africa. Deserts are great sources for abstract photography, because it is possible to simplify an image including only the sky and the sand in a shot. In the given image a side lighting put one side of the sand hill in shadow, while the other part is brightly colored in orange, which contrasts with the blue of the sky. A lonely tree provides an image with a focal point. A telephoto lens was used here to narrow the image on the right and simplify the landscape. The equipment used is the Nikon F90X, a 80-200 mm lens, a cable release, a tripod, a polarizing filter, 1/2 sec., f/16.

3. Snowy trees. This shot was taken after a strong snowfall. The trees look perfect standing against white snow that covers the earth, and an overcast sky, which form a unity. That is obviously a great black-and-white shot. The equipment used is The Olympus OM4-TI, a 28 mm lens, ISO 1600, f/11.

4. Lake District, England. A telephoto lens allows you to single out small details of a landscape and emphasize its peculiarities. Trees under bright sunshine and their reflection in the lake are the peculiarity, which is not typical of wide-angle lenses, but is intensified by tele zoom, creating simple, but beautiful composition. The equipment used is the Nikon F90X, a 80-200 mm zoom lens, a cable release, a polarizing filter, 1/8 sec., F/11.

5. The Aegean Sea. Greece. This shot was taken on a beautiful summer day, when the sea reflects the deepness of the blue sky. The white ripples in the bottom of the shot help to create an abstract image. The equipment used is the Olympus OM4-TI, a 28 mm lens, a polarizing filter, 1/250 sec., F/16.

A Trace of "Satan" Through the Bible

Throughout the Bible, the name of Satan may represent one being, but the characteristics of this being change several times. The one characteristic that remains the same throughout the Bible is that Satan likes to cause trouble. In Genesis 3, Satan tempts Eve to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge, which causes the fall of man. Although the name of Satan is not used, the passage suggests an evil being taking the form of a serpent, which many believe was Satan.

Next, which may be the first mention of the name of Satan in the Bible, is in 1Chronicles 21:1, Now Satan, setting himself against Israel, incited David to make a census of the people. This passage introduces the thought of Satan in opposition of humans.

Then, in Job 1:6, . . . the members of the court of heaven took their places in the presence of the Lord, and the Adversary, Satan, was there among them. In a footnote to this verse, in The Oxford Study Bible, it is stated that the Adversary is the enemy of human beings, not of God (511). At this meeting in heaven, Satan questions God repeatedly about Job, a very faithful and honorable follower of God. God grants Satan permission to harm Job, suggesting a lack of power in Satan. The Student Bible mentions in a side note that he has supernatural power to oppress people, but is restrained by God (465).

In Zechariah 3:1, at the right side of the angel of the Lord, Satan is there to accuse Joshua, further implementing the role of Satan to be just an accuser.

Satan is only mentioned a few times in the Old Testament, and the name refers to an evil being that sets himself against the people. It seems also that his power is very limited, as he can do very little without the permission of God. Also, it seems suggested that Satan resided in heaven and was allowed to be in the presence of God.

In the New Testament, the image of Satan changes drastically. In Matthew 4:9, Satan is referred to as the devil, where he tempts Jesus, which may be the first time Satan interferes, without the permission of God, with a persons life. Satan interferes with not just any person, but the son of God. This suggests that Satans evil power is now directed at God, and not people.

In Matthew 4:3, Satan is called the tempter, and he tempts many people throughout the New Testament. For example, in Thessalonians 2:18, Satan thwarted Paul and his companions on their way to Thessalonica.

Another suggestion of Satans independent power over people is, in Luke 13:16, a woman was bound by Satan for eighteen long years. Yet another is, in Luke 22:3, when Satan entered into Judas, where Satan not only interferes but enters the body of a person.

Satan asks Jesus, in Matthew 4:9, to . . . fall down and do me homage, wanting Jesus to worship him and not God, further suggesting his opposition and this the first mention of the worship of Satan. Then in 1Timothy 5:15, it is stated, For there have in fact been some who have taken the wrong turning and have gone over to Satan. This proves that people had begun viewing Satan as a type of god, and some had even begun worshipping him.

In Luke 10:18, [Jesus] said to them . . . And if it is Satan who drives out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then can his kingdom stand? This verse states that Satan has his own kingdom, which suggests the great power of Satan, much more at least than when he needed Gods permission to interfere with Jobs life.

In Acts 26:18, there is another mention of a kingdom of Satan: You are to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, from the dominion of Satan to God. Then in Revelation 2:13, the phrase, where Satan is enthroned is written.

Throughout the Bible, the name of Satan transforms from a name meaning simply accuser into the name of an evil force in his own kingdom outside the kingdom of God; a being that interferes with and tempts the lives of people of his own free will.

Whether this transformation is an accurate development of the being, or whether mans understanding of Satan changed is up for debate. One thing is clear the symbol of evil that is Satan is a complex one.

Mark Foley - Gay Congressman Resigns - The Real Deal

Florida Congressman Mark Foley has resigned from Congress amid charges and allegations that he had inappropriate e-mail contacts with a former teenage page in the House of Representatives. So what's the real deal? What's really going on? You can read the mainline press, and watch television, but you'll never get to the real story that way. You have to ferret it out for yourself, and that's what we have done. We have talked with the movers and the shakers, to learn what's really happening.

First off, no one has a right to violate the sanctity of a teenager's world. In our country young people are protected and given rights precisely because they are young. They are at an age where they can not protect themselves. It is the sign of an advanced society that we choose to protect them, as well we should.

People who would prey on our children should go to jail for the rest of their lives. There is no need to give such "scum" a second chance. We shouldn't take that chance by giving them another chance. It is also the symbol of an advanced society that the framers of our constitution went out of their way to protect the rights of criminals. Compared to every other society on earth, here's one observer that thinks we do a fairly good job. Now having said that what's going on in Washington?

First off, neither party has a stranglehold on ethics. The Democrats have stolen just as much money through the years as the Republicans. What they spend it on may be different, but the money in both cases seems to DISAPPEAR, with very little to show for it. The first rule of government, and I learned this personally from Noble Prize winning economist Milton Friedman is that, "Whoever is in power, loves to spend money."

Ronald Reagan was a hero of mine. Nobody could spend money like him, until this President that is. At least Reagan bankrupted the Soviet Union and drove them out of power. What does Bush have to show for his trillions? A war without clearly defined objectives, and hundreds of billions in pork spending that no society can afford. He is the first President in my lifetime that has chosen not to exercise the power of the VETO.

This gay Congressman was not a sleeper. People around him knew his peculiarities. They chose to ignore them for their own reasons. Foley was running to be Senator from Florida a couple of years ago, and the party torpedoed the nomination to give it to Mel Martinez out of fear that word would get out.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives knew something was up and decided to keep quiet. Don't these guys realize by now that THINGS DON'T BLOW OVER". Word gets out; it always does; whether it's Hewlett Packard trying to snuff out corporate eavesdropping, or Enron trying to bury their financial worries in lies to Wall Street. You can only keep that game going so long, and then somehow it goes wrong.

If the impotent Democrats are smart, they will say nothing, and do nothing about this Mark Foley affair. The world of the Republicans is vaporizing right before their eyes. These are men who say they are conservatives, and yet know nothing of conservatism. Barry Goldwater the Arizona conservative Republican Senator who started it all, would be appalled at what is taking place in his party today. He might not be able to call himself a conservative anymore if he were alive.

Foley was in charge of a subcommittee in the House that dealt with exploited children. You talk about living a lie. Where are we as citizens of a free society, if elected officials think that it's okay to espouse one thing in public, and then do the opposite thing in private. I would ask our elected officials, "How dumb can you be"? What contribution do you make to society? The rest of us are out here supporting ourselves, making our schools better, and improving our local communities. You guys are just living off the collective decency of the rest of us. You spend money like it's unlimited. You eat in the finest restaurants, yet your basic paycheck isn't big enough to support your lifestyle. Who's paying for these lifestyles? If it's not the citizens than who, what is expected in return.

Mark Foley is symbolic of something terribly wrong in both parties. It's an atmosphere of anything goes, and I am above reproach. I am not accountable. Is this really the message we want to send to the next generation. Foley, this sick, mindless Congressman wants to hide behind the notion that he was drunk when he committed these acts. Really, does he really think that the rest of us are going to fall for his mindless chatter?

I mentioned in this article that I am generally optimistic regarding my country. What keeps me optimistic today is the power of the Internet. It is something the founding fathers would have marveled at. Yes, there's too much "NOISE or CHATTER" out there. Yes, you have to be focused to get pass the sheer density of information that is available to each of us. Ah, once you get passed that noise though, there's a liberating experience awaiting each of us. We have the power to obtain whatever knowledge we desire on just about any topic.

We are not using that vast knowledge yet, but we will be. It is conceivable that by 2008, the Internet will completely change the look and feel of American politics. The political process as we know it will be unrecognizable compared to where we are today. With information there is power, and people will have choices that they do not have today. There's a new freedom coming, and with it, a shift of power back to the people.

Puffins, the Parrot of the Sea

It is August on the coast of Iceland, and the air is filled with the deep garbled growls of hundreds of puffins. The social birds have come to shore for the short breeding season, and the rocky banks are dotted with their squat, football-shaped bodies. From the ocean bursts a shiny five-year-old male carrying a dozen small herring in his beak. Flapping his wings mightily, he rises from the waves to the rocky cliffs where a hungry chick waits silently in a burrow hidden in the rocks. The puffin circles the sky above the burrow several times, looking out for herring gulls, which sometimes wait ashore to steal a puffins catch. But the coast is clear and the puffin swoops down, entering the dark burrow with a flurry. Instantly the chick springs to life, demanding its meal with tiny squeals. Downy gray and plump, with a sliver of a beak, the chick hardly resembles its striking black and white father. Large and colorful beaks, which will fall off after the season is over, have given these arctic birds their nicknamesthe sea parrot.

It was once questioned whether the pelagic puffin was a cross between a bird and a fish. Awkward and clumsy-looking on land, it certainly appears more adept in the sea, where its short wings effectively propel it through the water after small herring and sand eels. Its webbed feet function as a rudder, allowing the bird to maneuver sharp turns. Puffins can fly, and will actually beat their wings 100-400 beats per minute to become airborne. But because of the effort required to take flight, puffins will nest on cliffs where they more easily swoop down into the ocean. Puffins fly low to the water, and can reach speeds up to 55 miles per hour.

A puffins diet comes from the icy depths of the ocean, and an average dive can last twenty or thirty seconds, or more. With their specialized beaks, puffins are able to hold several fish at a time. Their raspy tongues hold fish against spines on their palate while they open their beak for more. An average catch would be 10-12 fish, but one puffin reportedly brought 62 fish in its beak at one time! Waterproof feathers provide protection from the chill of even the coldest waters in the arctic region. Even its coloration lends to its survival in the sea. The puffins dark coloring on its back make it difficult for predators to distinguish it from the dark waves as it floats on the ocean, while from below its white underside masks it from ocean enemies. This deceptive coloring is called counter shading.

Around the world it is estimated that 12-15 million puffins exist as three species: The horned puffin, named for its horny projections above its eyes; the tufted puffin, which has conspicuous straw-colored feathers extending from its crown during mating season; and the Atlantic puffin, the only puffin to live on the Atlantic Ocean, which has a steel-blue triangle at the base of its beak. In the 1800s over-hunting obliterated a native population in Maine, which has since been restored. They are not presently threatened. Puffin colonies are found breeding off the coasts of Alaska, Canada, North America, and North Asia; although Iceland is the breeding quarters of the largest population of puffins. Coastlines are filled with thousands of breeding pairs during the summer months. Puffins are monogamous, and while companions may part for the winter, which they spend out on the open sea, they usually return to the same partner, and even the same nest.

The rigorous mating ritual begins while the pair is still at sea. Breeding pairs engage in billing each other, skypointing (flying straight up), and strutting. By the time birds reach the shore, partnerships are well-established. The male digs the burrow using his beak to cut into the soil and his feet to shovel the rocks and other loose material away. Ideally, the burrow will be 2-3 feet long and protected from predators by rocks. Here the female lays one egg per year. Together, the pair incubates the egg, each taking a turn holding it under one wing and pressing it against its body. Cooperating in this way, both birds are able to leave the nest to feed.

When the egg hatches 40-53 days later, the parents continue to share responsibility for the chick. Feeding occurs four to five times a day, and after the first day of life the chick can be left alone in the burrow to wait for its next meal. The chick remains in the burrow about 40-55 days, whereupon it waits until evening before independently approaching the opening of the burrow for the first time. The fledgling sets out to sea on its own, where it will live for the next two years. Puffins reach sexual maturity at 3 years old, but will not generally return to their nesting grounds to mate until 4-5 years old. Puffins live long lives of 20 years or more.

Historically humans have used the puffin for meat and clothing (its skin is waterproof and warm when worn with the feathers turned inside), but hunting is generally discouraged today. In some countries it is forbidden by law. Meanwhile, man has come to value puffins as indicators of ocean health. By observing the condition of the puffin population, scientists determine whether over-fishing or harmful pollution is taking place. Oil spills threaten puffins by de-waterproofing their feathers, making them vulnerable to cold temperatures. Another negative impact on puffin colonies has been the unintentional introduction of rats and foxes to summer nesting areas.

Another risk of owning a business is that of losing your personal possessions, especially your home, over business debts. It's important, even if you are operating a home-based business, to make sure that you protect your personal assets from business seizure by incorporating. If your business is rather small, it may not be of much importance, but if you're running a rather substantial business, especially one that involves the purchase or any kind of products and supplies on a credit plan, make sure that you pay for the extra protecting your personal assets from seizures.
